Reach out and read

Reach Out and Read, a national phenomenon, and our local partner Reach Out and Read Rhode Island (RORRI) take pediatricians at their word. Relying on donor contributions to buy books, they encourage pediatricians to distribute the books – with wise advice about reading – at well-child checkups.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is ice-cold clear about the importance of reading to your children. The Academy reports:

“Reading regularly with young children stimulates optimal patterns of brain development and strengthens parent-child relationships at a critical time in child development, which, in turn, builds language, literacy, and social-emotional skills that last a lifetime.”

Pretty good results for reading a book (or three) with your child every day, yes? And you get to snuggle close, too!

Reach Out and Read RI  and South County Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds are trying to guarantee that no one in our region is left out. Their bags filled with Health Bodies, Healthy Minds purchases, RORRI has already introduced the program to every community health center in South County. The most recent were Block Island Health Services and the Narragansett Indian Health Center, which were priorities for Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds. RORRI provides training at each location.

Putting books in hands that might not otherwise hold them

HBHM has helped RORRI expand to additional medical practices and distribute more than 400 books, plus bookmarks and stickers, at Block Island Medical Center and the Narragansett Indian Health Center. RORRI provides physician training at each location.

This year, we’ve added 1 more pediatric practice and are recruiting others.   Wakefield Pediatrics will begin distributing books this spring!

Medical practices that wish to join the network should contact Cindy Buxton.
