Only 1% of our food in Rhode Island is local

Despite the efforts of our passionate farmers and fishing families, only about one percent of our food is actually produced in the Ocean State. The Providence Business News reports that the high cost of dwindling acres of farmland is a big part of the crisis.

Three bits of good news:

  1. Rhode Island has joined a regional coalition to increase locally-produced food.
  2. Groups like Farm Fresh Rhode Island are connecting local producers with schools, businesses, restaurants, and other major consumers.
  3. Farmers markets year-round! Locally-grown, delicious-tasting fresh food. And markets are increasingly accepting SNAP/WIC benefits thanks to our joint work with Thundermist Health Center

Farm Fresh Rhode Island offers a map of Rhode Island’s farmers markets. South County sites include Charleston, Narragansett, Richmond, South Kingstown (2), Westerly (2), and Wickford.
