“Pop Up” farmers market at Thundermist Health Center

Lots of farmers from South County will park their trucks right in the parking area of the Thundermist Health Center in Wakefield to provide you and your family with good, locally-grown vegetables and other foods. There’s more! You’ll get an additional $2 for every $5 you spend in WIC checks. Activities for the kids too: henna tattoos and starting their own potted vegetable gardens!

Four Sundays of “Fitness in the Park” in Miantonomi Park

Part of the annual Miantonomi Exploration Days, “Fitness in the Park” is an effort by the Newport Open Space Partnership (“NOSP”) to increase outdoor community activities.

These four Sunday sessions, starting August 6 and ending August 27, are free, mid-morning, and only 45 minutes; you’ll be able to feel righteous for the rest of the day, if not the week. For kids of all ages (including you parents; you have to drive there anyway). We’ll look for you in those cool gym shoes.

Kids Disc Golf for the 8+ crowd

A staple of most camps, “disc golf” or “frisbee golf” is fun and frustrating at the same time. It seems like it would be so easy to whirl a frisbee into a basket, and yet…

This is officially a tournament, but they’ll be grouping kids of the same age. Treats and prizes abound. Registration is expected, and expect to pay $3 for all the hard work that goes into setting the tourney up.

Salt Pond Safari at Winnapaug Farm Preserve

As part of this year’s “Land Trust Days”, the Westerly Land Trust invites your child on a Salt Pond Safari! Using a 30′ seine net, the Salt Pond Coalition will introduce a variety of aquatic creatures to the children. The kids will get wet! The morning includes a walk through a brief wooded stretch of the preserve. (Waterproof boots or sturdy water-closed-toe water shoes are recommended.)

Pre-registration is required; the event can only accommodate 15 children.

During the Land Trust Days nearly 80 activities from August to October, you can:

  • Go on a full moon walk
  • Explore some of Rhode Island’s best trails
  • Enjoy the view from the highest points in Newport and Providence, and look out across a four-mile vista in Glocester
  • Tour farms
  • Have fun at family festivals
  • Learn about insects, champion trees and edible wild plants
  • Learn the history of stone walls and what the geology of the stones tell us
  • Watch migrating birds being banded for research, and
  • Go paddling in Warren.
