Bet you’re not drinking enough water. We’re going to start now!

Lots of important reasons other than exercise to drink a half-gallon of water (and more) every day.

How much water do you need every day?

“You’d think we’d have a one-sentence answer,” says Colleen Muñoz, assistant professor of health sciences at the University of Hartford. “But it’s much more complicated.”

For years, the rule was 64 ounces: 8 glasses of 8 ounces. That’s a half gallon of unsweetened, uncolored, unflavored, un-messed with water.

Sounds like a lot, especially when you hear that the National Academy of Medicine has just upped the ante to 9-1/2 cups for women and 12 cups for men!

Why so much liquid? Heat, exercise (i.e. sweating), salt, alcohol, medications, and age, to name a few reasons.

You can also tell whether you’re getting enough fluid, but you’ll have to read the article “Hydration 101” at Nutrition Action to find out how!
